How To Prepare Meat Pie


A meat pie is a pie with a filling of meat and often other savory ingredients. They are popular in the United Kingdom, Australia, Ghana, Nigeria, Europe, New Zealand, Canada, Zimbabwe and South Africa.


  • 500g flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 250g butter and 1 egg
  • Water
  • Salt and seasoning cubes
  • Minced meat
  • 2 medium size carrots and Irish potatoes
  • 1 medium size onion
  • Vegetable oil

Tools needed

  • Oven
  • Medium size tray
  • Fork
  • Bowl
  • Wooden tray
  • Wooden roller


Step 1
Preheat your oven to about 320°F.

Step 2
Wash and cut the potatoes, carrots and onion into tiny pieces

Step 3
Pour some vegetable oil into the pot together with your slice onion and your minced meat. 

Step 4
Fry the meat until it turn pale. Add about 100ml of water. Add your seasoning cubes with salt for taste and add little water and leave to cook for about 10mins.

Step 5
Add the carrots and potatoes and mix thoroughly. Now leave to cook for some minutes. The mixtures is done when the veggies are soft.

Step 6
In a bowl, mix 2 spoonfuls of flour with water. This will serve as a thickener and binder for the filling. Add the flour mixture into the pot and mix thoroughly until well incorporated.

How To Prepare Meat Pie

Step 7
In a bowl, pour your flour, baking powder and a little quantity of salt and mix well with your hand. Add butter or margarine and mix them with your hands. Add water; little by little until a stiff dough is formed as seen above

Step 8
Line a baking tray with a non sticky baking sheet or you can oil the baking tray with butter/margarine.

Step 9
Break one egg and set it aside. Place the dough on a table and roll out the dough with a roller to about 6mm thickness.

Use a cutter to make a round cut on the roll out dough and put some of your meat sauce into the center of the round cuts, rub the egg on the inside edge of the cut meat dough as seen above.

Step 11
Fold the meat pie and use your fork to make a design at the edge of each meat pie as seen above.

Step 12
Arrange the meat pie into the oven tray, use the fork to make tiny holes on the meat pie (optional) and put it inside the preheated oven to bake.
